Herman_Douglas_Kirkland_SmallAbove All, Enjoy the Music:
Jazz Photography by Herman Leonard

June 20, 2011 – November 26, 2011

Beau Rivage Resort & Casino Gallery / Gallery of African American Art

Above All, Enjoy the Music features 40 masterworks of Herman Leonard, whose photographs include jazz icons such as Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday and many others.  Herman Leonard (1923-2010) was a great photographer and jazz aficionado, who created a dazzling visual collection of the world he loved.  The exhibition honors jazz as an American art form, with roots that began in the African American community of New Orleans in the 1890s and exploded on the New York club scene in the 1940s.  Its essence was captured by Herman Leonard beginning as early as 1948 in some of history’s most beautiful jazz photography.  Herman Leonard expressed his love of jazz by his well-known quote “Above all, enjoy the music.”
